Dee May is an independent journalist, artist and bootstrapping creative, who seeks out underreported narratives that are hyperlocal yet globally relevant. She is the founder and editor of PLATES, an international independent print journal that uses food to begin conversations about intangible cultures, human rights, social justice and the environment. As a one-woman entity, she oversees PLATES cover-to-cover; from field interviews to in-situ sketches, commissioning to photography, cover design to distribution. She has received one-off grants and residency invitations from Can Serrat (Spain, 2020/21), Rimbun Dahan (Malaysia, 2020/21) and the INXO Arts Fund Award (Malaysia, 2019). She has also received speaking invitations from the Malaysian Design Archive, The Godown Arts Centre, Singapore Art Museum, Singapore Book Council, Singapore Writers Festival and Borneo Bengkel, among others. She is a Chevening and Cumberland Lodge alumna. Dee May is currently based in Kuala Lumpur.
